Services Offered by the Private Industry Council…

In order to understand the structure of the PIC, it is helpful to view it like a company. Within this company are several divisions; each division is responsible for developing, providing and improving its own specialized product or service. Employment and training services are available to "eligible PIC participants" only. Other services, such as Labor Market Information and Employer Services, are available at little or no cost to members of the community.

Presently, the Private Industry Council has five divisions:

Adult/Reemployment Division

Youth Division

Career Resource Center

Labor Market Information Division

Adult/Reemployment Division

Offers a variety of services related to job development for people 22 years of age and older who meet certain eligibility criteria. Services include: Eligibility Criteria are as follow: Youth Division

Provides training, services, and work experience opportunities for local youth (age 14-21). These customers meet eligibility criteria tied to low skills, in-school or out of school, at-risk of dropping out of school or have graduated but are undereducated. Services provided are as follow:

  1. Tutoring, study skills training and instruction, leading to completion of secondary school, including dropout prevention strategies
  2. Alternative secondary school services, as appropriate
  3. Summer employment opportunities that are directly linked to academic and occupational learning
  4. As appropriate, paid and unpaid work experiences, including internships and job shadowing
  5. Occupational skill training, as appropriate
  6. Leadership development opportunities, which may include community service and peer-centered activities encouraging responsibility and other positive social behaviors during non-school hours, as appropriate
  7. Support services
  8. Adult mentoring for the period of participation and a subsequent period, for a total of not less than 12 months
  9. Follow-up services for not less than 12 months after the completion of participation, as appropriate
  10. Comprehensive guidance and counseling, which may include drug and alcohol abuse counseling and referral, as appropriate.
  Career Resource Center The Career Resource Center is located within the San Luis Obispo PIC offices and is available to "PIC-eligible" participants. The guiding rule of the Career Resource Center is to provide a balanced mixture of up-to-date technology using a personal touch.

Each year, PIC studies 20 various occupations and presents the results in an annual Occupational Outlook Report . The goal of this project is to improve the match between employer labor market needs and the qualifications of job seekers. Information published in this report is based on surveys of local employers. Our most recent edition is a compilation of four years of research, profiling 79 occupations.
