WHAT IS WIA?

The Federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) provides the framework for a national workforce preparation and employment system. Activities authorized by WIA - Title I are provided at the local level to individuals in need of those services including job seekers, dislocated workers, youth, incumbent workers, new entrants to the workforce, veterans, persons with disabilities, and employers. The WIA's purpose is to provide workforce investment activities that increase the employment retention and earnings of participants, and increase occupational skill attainment of participants.

AM I ELIGIBLE FOR WIA - TITLE I SERVICES?

All adults age 18 or older are eligible to receive core (self-directed) services without eligibility or residency requirements. Additional intensive services are available to eligible unemployed individuals who have been unable to obtain jobs through core (self-directed) services. Additionally, training scholarships may also be available for those who meet intensive services eligibility criteria.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A CLIENT OR CUSTOMER OF A PARTNER AGENCY OR RECEIVING BENEFITS/ASSISTANCE TO USE THE RESOURCE CENTER?

No. The Resource Center is open to the public. Anyone can use the Resource Center for job search or related activities.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

There is no fee for any of the services or materials available in the Resource Center.

WHAT HOURS ARE YOU OPEN?

The Resource Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, except on legal holidays.

DO I NEED TO REGISTER TO USE THE RESOURCE CENTER?

Yes. There is a one-time easy registration form that you will need to fill out on your first visit to the Resource Center. You will need to show our staff valid documents, which verify your U.S. Citizenship or Authorization to Work (i.e. social security card and a state driver's license/I.D.). Contact the Resource Center for a list of acceptable documents. Once you are registered you can use all the services in the Resource Center. Each time you return to use the Resource Center we ask that you simply sign in so we can keep track of how many people are using our services.

IS THE RESOURCE CENTER WHERE I COME TO GET A JOB?

The Resource Center provides the "resources" so YOU can locate job openings or job information. Our resources include:

On-line/Computer Job Search Sites on the Internet;
Word Processing Software Programs for Resumes, Cover Letters, Fax Covers, etc.;
Library materials, Newspapers, Job Boards, and Job Opportunities Binders;
Copier, Fax, and Laser Printers;
Telephones (for job search related calls);
Open enrollment job development workshops;
Instructional Video and Audio Tapes;
And staff to assist you with your self-directed job search.

WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE A COMPUTER?

We have made every effort to make computer job search as easy as "point and click". Our computers have numerous "links" to popular job search sites and local employers. The Resource Center staff is always happy to assist you.

CAN I COME TO THE RESOURCE CENTER TO GET A RESUME?

The Resource Center is provided so that you have the necessary tools for a successful job search. Our staff does not write or produce a resume for you, that is something you need to complete on your own. We will be very happy to help you create a professional resume using the resources we have available.

WHAT IF I CAN'T TYPE?

Many of our resources are based on the "point and click" theory. However, most resumes do require typing or word processing skills of some kind. Unfortunately, we do not have staff available to type resumes for participants in the Resource Center.

CAN I USE THE RESOURCE CENTER PHONES TO MAKE OUTSIDE CALLS?

Yes, the phones are available for your use during our normal business hours. Use of the telephones is restricted to conducting job search activities only.

WHAT IS CALJOBS?

CalJOBS is the State of California's Internet based job opportunity browsing system which is operated and maintained by the Employment Development Department (EDD). At any given time there are approximately 300-500 job opportunities in San Luis Obispo County posted on CalJOBS. CalJOBS is available in the Resource Center on both CalJOBS dedicated computers and job development computers, which have Internet access. Our staff is available to assist you with using CalJOBS.

CAN I GET A LIST OF JOB OPENINGS FOR SAN LUIS OBISPO, PASO ROBLES OR SOME OTHER CITY?

Not specifically. For the most part, our job search resources are divided by region or county and not a specific city. For many of the Internet sites you need to specify an area or zip code to narrow your search down. There is not a site for just "San Luis Obispo" or "Paso Robles". Our staff can help you narrow your search so you can move quickly through available job openings. The Resource Center does have local newspapers and a job board that provide more local opportunities.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET NEW JOB LISTINGS?

Most of the Internet job search sites (CalJOBS, America's Job Bank, etc.) are being updated continually.

WHAT KINDS OF JOBS ARE POSTED ON THE JOB BOARD?

We provide this space for any employer wishing to post a job opportunity in the Career Center. For the most part, these jobs are short term or temporary positions. However, larger local employers and EDD will post openings, application information and upcoming recruiting or interview activities.

CAN I ACCESS MY INTERNET EMAIL ACCOUNT USING THE COMPUTERS IN THE RESOURCE CENTER?

Yes, we encourage job seekers to have an individual Internet e-mail account. Many employers ask that you e-mail resumes and cover letters to them. You can sign up with any free e-mail provider using the computers in the Resource Center. We ask that you limit e-mail to job search activities only.

CAN I BRING MY CHILDREN INTO THE RESOURCE CENTER?

Our goal is to provide a professional atmosphere for your individual job search efforts. We do not encourage our customers to bring their children to the Resource Center. We do understand that it may be difficult to find childcare. If you bring your children, you will be responsible for them. We ask that the children be quiet and well behaved at all times. Children are not permitted to use the computers at any time.

IS THERE CHILDCARE AVAILABLE IN THE RESOURCE CENTER?

No, there is no childcare available.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE RESOURCE CENTER?

No, please do not bring food or beverages into the Resource Center - they're not computer friendly! However at the Creekside Career Center, we do have a small kitchen area next to the Resource Center for consuming food and beverages. If you have any questions please see a staff member.

HOW CAN I IDENTIFY A RESOURCE CENTER STAFF MEMBER?

Staff members will be wearing a badge, which says, "Creekside Career Center - Staff" or "Estrella Career Center - Staff" depending on the location.
