WHAT WE ARE...

The Private Industry Council (PIC) is a private non-profit corporation that provides its services throughout San Luis Obispo County. The PIC receives federal money that is used to pay the cost of educating and training local residents and placing them into local jobs. This funding is used partly to pay staff who provide assessment, testing, counseling, training, and job placement services. The money is also used partly to pay the costs of school and training for job seekers. The remainder of these funds are used to pay employers for their training costs when they hire and prpare our trainees.

WHO WE HELP...

These individuals were either laid off from their jobs, or have been unemployed for some time, or are youth who are at-risk of dropping out of school unless they find a way to relate school to work, and a future livelihood.

HOW WE ARE DESIGNED...

The corporation was formed in 1980. The board of directors (which is the actual "council") consists of local business and government leaders. They meet each month to set the direction of the organization, review the results of current work, and plan future policy in job training as it relates to job growth in San Luis Obispo County.

The staff of the PIC is employed by the board of directors. Most of the employees are located in the main office in San Luis Obispo. Some of them perform administrative work such as recordkeeping, finance, accounting, and management. Others work as counselors, case managers, and job developers for our trainees and customers.

The remainder of the staff are located in the North County Learning Center in Paso Robles or at Lopez Learning Center in Arroyo Grande. These locations are primarily designed to support the youth school and training programs in those areas of the county.

Overall, the PIC functions as a "broker" between employers who are seeking workers, and local citizens who are seeking training and jobs. The job of the PIC is to fit all of these pieces together, sometimes with its own resources, and other times in partnership with other local agencies, schools, and businesses.

WHAT IT ALL ADDS UP TO...
